I ordered this book for several reasons:I used to love the "Mammas and the Pappas", l am interested in what it might be like to grow up in a rock & roll family, I enjoy reading about unconventional childhoods, upbringing and families, I am a big fan of Mackenzie Phillips and know a bit about her accomplishments and her struggles, and lastly, I am extremely interested and emotionally invested in all facets of addiction.
This book delivered all that and so much more! Ms. Phillips is an excellent writer. She pulled me in from the very start of the book and kept me reading late into the night. And yes, her upbringing was extremely unconventional- at times exciting, but at times also incredibly neglectful and abusive. I found myself pondering whether she might have had a guardian angel....how else did she survive her childhood?!
Ms. Phillips has a way of revealing some incredibly sad, what some might call shocking information in the most loving, caring, courageous and sensitive way imaginable. I was amazed and impressed by this book and I highly recommend it.
~Thank you, Mackenzie Phillips, for sharing your incredible memoir with the world!

Very honest, even when it didn't paint her in the best light. I was impressed by her candor, and you could truly feel her joys and sorrows. I don't know what her life will bring, but at least she is truthful enough to admit her mistakes and not act like she is some high and mighty entitled actress. I was truly touched. I hope she writes a sequel.
This is one of the most genuine autobiographies I have ever read. What a ride! Mackenzie shares what it was like growing up as a Hollywood princess and man, was that castle crazy! I could visualize everything so clearly reading this and felt like I was going through it with her. I was in tears at some points and just felt completely enthralled. You really can't put it down. If I ever get the pleasure of meeting my hero, Mack, I will need to give her a hug for sure.
Mackenzie Phillips' memoir of celebrity and addiction offers a fascinating look into an alien--for most of us anyway--world. The central figure in Mackenzie's life is her charismatic and abusive father, John Phillips. John led the 1960s pop group The Mamas and the Papas and wrote and performed monster hit songs like "California Dreamin'" that oldies and classic rock stations still play thousands of times a day, ensuring a steady stream of royalty income to his widow and five children. John also abused cocaine and heroin to such an extreme that in the mid-1970s, he became too much for Keith Richards and his then-girlfriend Anita Pallenberg to tolerate and they threw John out of their London home. Mackenzie's alcoholic mother, whom John left for stepmother Michelle Phillips, tried to instill good manners but could not stop strong-willed Mackenzie from running wild. Mackenzie spent most of her childhood in her father's chaotic, drug-filled and completely undisciplined home. Her father encouraged her to take LSD, marijuana and cocaine and only got angry with her when she invaded his secret cache of the best drugs rather than the everyday drugs he left out for himself and his friends to consume.
After growing up in a world of limousines, private jets, entitled celebrity and endless partying, Mackenzie found her own fame--and limitless money to spend on drugs--early through a key role in the film "American Graffiti" and the TV series "One Day at a Time." Having learned from her father that the rules of straight society did not apply to her, and with only a modest education provided by interrupted sessions at alternative schools and on-set tutors (though she was a good student), the friendly Mackenzie simply continued the party she had grown up with until she spun so far out of control that the producers of her TV series fired her.
You've no doubt heard about Mackenzie's incest allegations against John, which some family members say they believe and others say they do not. Given John's lack of other boundaries, John and Mackenzie's extreme drug use, and the fact that royalty income from her father's estate and "One Day at a Time" residuals mean that Mackenzie did not need to sell a lot of books to live, I would not be surprised if the allegations were true, but I don't really have a horse in that race. What matters is that Mackenzie suffered unimaginable abuse through her parents' weakness, neglect, self-absorption and self-indulgence.
"High on Arrival" seems an honest attempt to work through the pain. One might say Mackenzie's case is so extreme in every way that publishing the book is simply an exercise in vanity and/or greed on her part. However, I actually know a fair number of people brought up in Southern California around the same time as Mackenzie. While their parents may not have left bowls of cocaine on the coffee tables or had sex with them, the parents were absorbed in their own concerns and pretty much threw money at their children and let them bring up themselves in a narcissistic world centered on immediate gratification. They remain lost and damaged to this day. Maybe Mackenzie's story of her efforts to face her pain and become accountable will help them. I ended up rather liking her, wanting to give her the benefit of the doubt and wishing her well.
I applaud Mac for laying it all out and baring her soul, I’m sure that wasn’t easy and YES I believe her 100% these bad reviews are fans of her father and have hero worship which is utterly pathetic imo, she has ZERO reason to lie and why would she? Her life was interesting enough she told it as it was warts and all. For anyone to find fault with that well I hope no one judges you for your past. The book held my attention all the way to the end, and she’s correct when she states forgiveness is helping yourself not the one that did you wrong, to truly heal we must let go of the hurt done to us, she also needs to forgive herself she has a beautiful soul, she is a strong woman who’s been to hell & back and I wish her nothing but peace and happiness for the rest of her life.
